In our last blog you learned how to create a wellness vision that aligns to you and your values and how it’s essential to have these core principles firmly in place to help map your future. Now it’s time to take the next step by setting goals which will act like the stepping stones to achieve this vision. So let’s take a deeper look into the heart of this practice, grasp its importance, and learn to create goals that drive us forward to triumph using a special tool called the SMART Criteria to ensure success.
Let’s get into it!
Goals serve as the roadmap to our aspirations, guiding us from where we are to where we want to be. They bridge the gap between our present reality and our envisioned future, providing direction, purpose, and motivation along the way. Whether it’s advancing in our careers, improving our health, or nurturing our relationships; goals shape our actions and shape our destiny.
Just a Touch of the Science-y Stuff Behind Goal Setting
While we won’t explore the science behind Goal Setting too much in this blog, it’s important to note that behind every goal lies a complex interplay of psychology and neuroscience. Our brains are wired to respond to challenges and rewards, with goal setting triggering a cascade of neural responses that fuel our motivation and drive.
To craft effective goals, we turn to the SMART criteria – a set of principles that ensure our goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. These criteria act as a guiding light, helping us create goals that are clear, actionable, and aligned with our overarching vision. By adhering to the SMART framework, we set ourselves up for success and maximise our chances of achievement.
Let’s explore the SMART criteria in a bit more depth…
Specificity is the cornerstone of effective goal setting. Rather than vague aspirations, specific goals provide clarity and focus, outlining exactly what we aim to accomplish. By defining the who, what, when, where, and why of our goals, we create a roadmap that leaves no room for ambiguity or confusion.
Vague Goal: “I want to get in shape.”
Specific Goal: “I will run 5 kms three times a week and attend Pilates classes twice a week to improve my overall fitness level.”
Measurability transforms abstract goals into tangible milestones. By quantifying our objectives, we gain insight into our progress and can adjust our efforts accordingly. Whether it’s tracking metrics, logging achievements, or monitoring key performance indicators, measurable goals provide a clear benchmark for success.
Non-Measurable Goal: “I want to save money.”
Measurable Goal: “I will save $500 per month by automatically transferring 20% of my monthly income into a dedicated savings account.”
Achievability is about setting goals that stretch our capabilities without overwhelming us. While it’s important to aim high, setting unattainable goals can lead to frustration and demotivation. By assessing our resources, skills, and constraints, we can ensure that our goals are challenging yet within reach.
Unachievable Goal: “I want to become fluent in Mandarin in three months.”
Achievable Goal: “I will enroll in a Mandarin language course and practice speaking for at least 30 minutes every day to improve my proficiency over the next six months.”
Relevance is about ensuring that our goals align with our values, aspirations, and long-term objectives. A relevant goal is one that resonates with our passions, priorities, and overarching vision for success. By asking ourselves how each goal contributes to our personal growth and fulfillment, we can ensure that our efforts are focused and purposeful.
Irrelevant Goal: “I want to learn how to play the guitar.”
Relevant Goal: “I will dedicate 1 hour each day to learn how to play the guitar because music brings me joy and enhances my creativity.”
Time-bound goals are anchored in a specific timeframe, providing a sense of urgency and accountability. By setting deadlines, we create momentum and prevent procrastination, ensuring that our goals remain a priority. Whether it’s a short-term sprint or a long-term commitment, time-bound goals compel us to take action and stay on track.
Open-Ended Goal: “I want to write a book.”
Time-Bound Goal: “I will outline the chapters of my book by the end of this month and aim to complete the first draft within six months.”
Within the realm of goal setting, it’s crucial to distinguish between behavioural goals and outcome-based goals. While outcome-based goals focus on the end result, such as losing weight or landing a promotion, behavioural goals zoom in on the actions and behaviours required to achieve those outcomes. By shifting our focus to behavioural goals, we create a roadmap for sustainable change and long-term success rather than short lived, once off goals, encouraging a new habit to take shape!
Armed with the knowledge of goal setting principles, it’s time to put theory into practice and craft our own goals. Start by reviewing your wellness Vision (need a refresher? Here’s the link to the last blog), clarifying your aspirations and identifying areas where you want to make progress. Then, break down your overarching goals into smaller, actionable steps that you can take towards achieving them.
For example:
WELLNESS VISION: I want to be healthy, strong and happy so I can be an active part of the lives of my children and grandchildren for many years to come
GOALS:
1. I will commit to Pilates 3 times per week to stay healthy
2. I will incorporate 30 grams of protein into each meal to help keep my bones and muscles strong
3. I will commit to reflecting at the end of each week in my wellness journal because I value my mental health and happiness
By setting clear objectives, staying focused, and tracking your progress, you pave the way for success and fulfillment.
As you embark on your goal-setting journey, remember that success is not merely reaching the destination but embracing the journey itself. Each goal achieved is a testament to your resilience, determination, and commitment to personal growth. So, embrace the challenges, celebrate the victories, and keep moving forward having faith in your ability to create the life you desire!
Goal setting is a powerful tool for personal and professional growth, empowering us to turn our dreams into reality. By understanding the principles of effective goal setting and applying them to our lives, we unlock our full potential and chart a course towards a future filled with success, fulfillment, and endless possibilities. So, dare to dream, set your goals, and embark on the journey of a lifetime!
